Ann Jones

Bio: Artist and sometime educator who seldom finds time to make work. Interested in the everyday, in domestic spaces and the stuff that surrounds us. On the basis that there’s enough stuff in the world already, I’m aiming to make work with what’s already here by examining the accumulated clutter of several decades. In reality, now mostly a full time carer for an elderly parent.

Domestic archaeology - photography invaded the country (a commitment to nonsense)
A photographic triptych of images of a children’s encyclopaedia from the 1960s. The first and third images are snippets of illustrations of a camera and how it works. The middle image is of the text on the page that includes the entry on Photography. As the picture is taken looking into the partially open book the start of the text reads PHOTOGRAPHY invaded the country. The texture of the paper and its slightly yellowish tinge hint at the age of the book.

Domestic archaeology - borrowing summer from a book
A photographic triptych of images of blue skies, fluffy white clouds and fresh green leaves on trees. The images are rephotographed from found images in a children’s encyclopaedia from the 1960s. The images become mostly pattern and colour as a resulted of being small fragments of bigger pictures and the dominance of the halftone dot pattern.

Domestic details - under the microscope
A photographic triptych of abstract reddish images with little detail other than a few lines overlaying the halftone dot pattern of the print process. The images are close-up details of an illustration on an old book cover.

Archaeology of the studio - missing the point (new art from old)
A triptych photographs of small sections of a photographic print. The print is a work print from a series of prints of disruptions to the domestic space and the sections here are mostly of out of focus areas of the print which is of the rumpled sheets of an unmade bed. As the subject matter of the original image is plain white the darker bits of the image are soft shadows.

Domestic archaeology - discarded geometries (while doing the recycling)
A triptych photographs of a cardboard box being broken up for recycling. The images are almost monochromatic with the square shapes of box’s structure providing a geometry. The fibrous texture of the card softens the images.

Domestic archaeology - orange
An abstract photographic triptych of abstract orange images. Each section of the triptych has a narrow black band at the top and two or three blue rectangles forming a dotted line just under the black top edge. The dot pattern from the print process dominates and shows the orange colour to break down into red dots on yellow.

Domestic archaeology - time travel
A triptych photographs of a small pile of old books. The covers are all similar in colour but with different textures. Each cover has three think red stripes breaking up the uniformity of the creamy manilla colour. In the first image the text PARIS 1943 can be read and in the last image text reads LONDRES 1945.

A triptych photographs of torn cardboard. There is some drama in the shadows but the images are almost monochromatic with the shapes of the torn pieces and the fibrous texture of the card the dominant features.

A triptych photographs all rephotographed from the same found images of the sea. Cropped in closely the images are abstracted and dominated by the half-tone dot pattern of the printing process.

Domestic archaeology - tear it up
A triptych of photographs of a torn-up close-up photograph of a found image in an old book. The torn print is dominated by the dot pattern of the print process of the original book and the texture of the torn paper. The paper has been torn into strips some of which have curled up meaning that things go in and out of focus.

Domestic archaeology - origins of ugliness
A triptych of layered images rephotographed from a book about an oil company. Images of the industrial structures associated with oil exploration are layered with sections of a photograph of plastic bottles. As both layers are taken from photographs printed in a book, the printing dot pattern is a visible distraction.

Domestic archaeology - summer skies (real window, found view)
A triptych of photographs of the blue skies and white clouds seen through the frosted glass of a bathroom window. The sky is actually from a found photograph in a book so the texture of the obscure glass is layered with the halftone dots of the print process of the book. The images are effective abstract.

Domestic archaeology - party time
A triptych of photographs of curls of paper cut from the pages of a clothing catalogue and turned into party streamers. The streamers are on or in front of indistinct photographs of photographs from a book made for an earlier work but all that is visible of these is the halftone dot pattern of the print process.

A triptych of photographs of photographs of a catalogue from a clothing and homeware company. Each image drifts in and out of focus as the prints of photographs made for a previous work are held curled together rather than flat in front of the camera. Layered in front of each image is a large dot which is taken from photographs of the page edges of a clothing catalogue. Text on the first image reads ’Summer’ and on the last ’15% off’.

Each image drifts in and out of focus as the prints of photographs made for a previous work are held curled together rather than flat in front of the camera. Sections of the first and third images have been switched to negative and copied onto the middle image.

Day 11
Domestic archaeology - yesterday’s vision
A triptych of images of the covers of two books, one a phrase book in several languages aimed at tourists the other a French vocabulary revision book. The covers are similar in colour but the textures are different. The images are essentially abstract but the word VISION can be read upside down on the middle image. The pencil marking of 4/3 indicates they the cost of the book was four shillings and sixpence, and dates it to the 1960s or earlier.

A triptych of images photographed from a book about an oil company. The images are all from one picture and repeat an indistinct image of a bird against the sky. The quality of the images is degraded as the sections get closer in from left to right and the halftone dot pattern dominates.

A triptych of images photographed from an old encyclopaedia for children. The images are layered so that we see a block of colour image from the cover through a fragment of a diagrammatic drawing from an inside page. The middle image is dominated by the work END but the triptych as a whole is essentially abstract and dominated by the halftone dot pattern of the colour section.

Domestic archaeology - sound of the suburbs
A triptych of images photographed from an old encyclopaedia for children. The images are layered so that we see a colour image from the cover through a more diagrammatic drawing from an inside page. The overall image across the triptych is an aeroplane with the nose in the first image and the tail in the last. In the colour image the back of the plane is behind a tree. snippets of text can be read from the diagram and the middle and right hand image also include the words ‘aeroplane’ and ‘tree’ taken from inside the book.

A triptych of images photographed from the pages of an old encyclopaedia for children. From left to right the images are of an owl, a bear and a stag. Each is overlaid with text from a different book to create a random, nonsensical narrative which reads: He lacked courage. She ran to his help. They rushed after the sheep. He sprang onto a branch. She turned her steps towards the river.He does his best.

Domestic archaeology - other ways of seeing
A triptych of images photographed from the pages of an old encyclopaedia for children. The images are fairly abstract and colourful. All three show the halftone dot pattern of the print process and sections have been moved from one image to another, changed from positive to negative or inverted and enlarged. As a result the images are effectively abstract and the circular form in the centre of the middle image dominates the triptych.

Domestic archaeology - on not knowing which way is up
A triptych of images photographed from the pages of an old encyclopaedia for children. The images are fairly abstract and colourful. All three show the halftone dot pattern of the print process. On the left, there is blue sky above what could be a railway line but the image seems to be upside down. The middle image is more abstract but again there could be blue sky at the top. The final image is again quite abstract but could be seen as a cloudy sky above an upside down mountain.

Domestic archaeology - beyond the black square
A triptych of images photographed from the pages of an old encyclopaedia for children. Each image is a layering of sections of two drawn illustrations, one on each side of the page held up to the light. Each image is square and each contains one or more squarest. On the left is a black square with a white border and on the right a black border around a white square. In the middle are a grid of four smaller black squares. All the the images on the other side of the page are indistinct but legs and feet can be made out in the images at either end.

Domestic archaeology - backwards and forwards
A triptych of monochromatic images photographed from the pages of an old encyclopaedia for children. Each image is a layering of sections of two line drawing illustrations, one on each side of the page held up to the light. As the pictures are small sections of larger illustrations, it’s not clear what the subject matter is and the images are effectively patterns.
